I Have a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Human Services. I have been employed as a general youth worker and as a disability support worker throughout the Far North Queensland and Brisbane regions since graduating from James Cook University in 2010.
As a Youth Worker and Disability Support Worker I have had experience working with youth/children from various cultural backgrounds and areas of disability. I worked closely with Case Workers in providing therapy and recreational services to children with ASD.
Many of these clients were non-verbal, so I became familiar with the use of communication tools such as diagram/symbol prompt cards as an aid for communication. I also provided respite care and assisted with daily routines such as toileting, feeding and nursing.
I work effectively (and empathetically) with clients who exhibit challenging behaviours and frustration due to sensory stimuli and/or anxiety.
I’m a guitar teacher and run my own mobile guitar tuition classes here on the Sunshine Coast. I have a keen interest in music therapy and how it can be used to great benefit when supporting people with ASD.
